WhatsApp brings music to statuses and channels
Since March 10, 2025, Meta has introduced music features in WhatsApp worldwide - the official rollout started on March 28. Since then, users have been able to use music in their status updates or distribute it via channels. This opens up a new communication channel for musicians, labels and their communities.
Music in WhatsApp statuses: soundtrack for personal updates
Status updates can now be accompanied by up to 60 seconds of music from the integrated audio library. The tracks can be combined with photos or videos and remain visible - as usual - for 24 hours. They are only visible to contacts whose phone numbers are stored with each other.
A direct way for artists to remain approachable:
Whether it's a studio insight, tour video clip or new release - music lends additional expression to everyday moments and strengthens the bond with your audience.
Channels with music: direct communication without detours
The new WhatsApp channels work like a broadcast format: only admins can post content, followers can interact with reactions (e.g. emojis) but cannot reply. The identity of followers remains hidden.
Channels offer artists, labels and organizations:
- Musical content in their own format
- Simple communication without commentary dynamics
- A direct line to an interested target group
Additional tools for content management via meta
Manage content - securely and efficiently
Meta provides new functions in the Rights Manager for managing music content. Unauthorized content can be reported and removed. Temporary blocking of channels is also possible in the event of repeated infringements.
All relevant information on licenses, music usage and reporting can be found in the current Merlin-Meta Deal Notice.
WhatsApp becomes a music platform
The new music functions also make WhatsApp relevant for the music industry. Status and channels enable new forms of communication, more control over content and a direct approach to fans - embedded in one of the world's most widely used messengers.
