Meta Content Protection: New tool against reel reposts
Meta launches a new content protection tool for Reels on Instagram and Facebook. Find out how artists can protect their videos and keep their reach.
Meta is introducing a new content protection tool to help creators and artists better protect their original Reels. The feature detects reuploads on Instagram and Facebook and gives you control over what happens to your content.
This is a long overdue step, especially for musicians and creators whose videos are frequently reused.
What is the Meta Content Protection Tool?
With the new tool, Meta automatically scans Instagram and Facebook for full or partial reposts of your Reels. The prerequisite is that you actively register your videos for protection once. After that, the process runs automatically in the background.
As soon as a match is found, you receive a notification and can decide how to handle the repost.
You have these options for a repost
If your video is uploaded again, you can choose between several actions:
- Track performance
The repost remains online and receives an “Original by” notice with a link to your profile. - Block video
The repost is removed or made unavailable. - Release claim
The repost remains online without tracking or linking. - Create Allow List
Certain accounts can intentionally continue to use your content.
This way, you retain control without sacrificing reach.
What to do with false claims
If someone else claims your video first, you can dispute the claim using Meta’s existing copyright tools. The new system complements the current rights management process but does not fully replace it.
Who can use the tool
The feature is being rolled out gradually and is currently available to:
- Creators in the Facebook Content Monetization Program
- Creators who already use the Rights Manager
The tool can be found in the Professional Dashboard → Content → Content Protection.
Reaction videos, compilations and similar formats are not supported.
Why this is particularly important for artists
The tool is a major step forward for musicians and creators. Instead of uncontrolled reposts, you gain transparency over where your content appears and how it is being used.
In concrete terms, this means:
- Protection for original music and visuals
- More visibility through proper linking
- Traceable reach across reposts
- Greater control over your own brand
At the same time, Meta sends a clear signal against low-effort repost content and in favor of originality.
What this means for your social strategy
Original content is becoming increasingly important and Meta is rewarding clear authorship more strongly. Artists who use Reels strategically, post consistently and protect their content can build long-term reach without losing control.
For musicians in particular, it is now worth seeing Reels not just as a promotional tool but as an integral part of a broader content strategy.
