Spotify Lossless Audio: Experience studio-quality sound with Premium
Spotify Lossless Audio: How Your Music Now Sounds in High Resolution
Spotify continues to enhance its Premium experience and finally delivers on a long-awaited community request: Lossless Audio. With this feature, Premium subscribers can stream their favorite songs in 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC, a level of quality previously reserved for hi-res platforms.
The rollout is happening gradually across more than 50 countries, including Germany, the USA and the UK. Users will receive an in-app notification once the feature becomes available.
What is Spotify Lossless audio?
“Lossless” means that audio data is transmitted without compression or quality loss. While standard streaming compresses parts of the audio signal, FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec) preserves every detail of the original master.
With up to 24-bit and 44.1 kHz, Spotify now delivers CD-quality sound. For Premium users, this translates to richer dynamics, clearer highs, and a wider frequency range—especially noticeable in complex arrangements, acoustic music, or intimate vocals.
How to activate Spotify Lossless Audio
Spotify integrates Lossless Audio as an additional sound-quality mode. You can choose whether to enable it for Wi-Fi, mobile streaming or downloads.
Here’s how to activate it:
- Open the Spotify app and tap your profile icon in the top left.
- Go to Settings & Privacy → Media Quality.
- Select Lossless for Wi-Fi, mobile, and downloads.
Important: Lossless must be activated manually on each device. When active, an indicator appears in the Now Playing window or the Connect picker.
Note that Lossless files are larger and therefore consume more data and storage space.
Compatible devices and listening tips
High-resolution streaming is available on smartphones, tablets, and desktops, as well as through many Spotify Connect-enabled devices (including Sony, Bose, Samsung, and Sennheiser). Sonos and Amazon devices will be supported soon.
To truly experience the benefits of Spotify Lossless, the platform recommends using wired headphones or Spotify Connect. Bluetooth currently transmits audio in a compressed format, which limits the full hi-res effect.
What Spotify Lossless means for artists
The introduction of Lossless Audio brings new opportunities for artists and producers. Your music will now be heard exactly as you mixed and mastered it, without compromise.
Listeners can enjoy subtle details—an essential upgrade for orchestral recordings, acoustic sessions, and finely-tuned electronic tracks.
Combine Lossless Audio with creative Spotify features such as DJ, Jam, AI Playlist, Mix, and daylist, helping fans discover your music in the best possible quality.
