Spotify Messages: Share & chat songs directly in the app

Music thrives on sharing. Until now, this often happened through external platforms like WhatsApp, Instagram or TikTok. You’d send a link to a new favorite song and hope your friends would actually listen.
Now it’s even easier: with Spotify Messages, you can share and comment on songs, podcasts and audiobooks directly within the Spotify app.
The feature is being rolled out in selected markets and is available to users aged 16 and over, including both Free and Premium accounts.

What are Spotify Messages?

Messages are 1:1 chats within Spotify where users can respond to shared content using text and emojis. Spotify focuses on personal, private conversations between people who have already interacted — for example by sharing content, creating playlists together, organizing a Jam or joining a Blend.
You can send messages to contacts with whom you’ve already interacted on Spotify, or to those sharing a Duo or Family plan. Group chats are not available at this time.
Messages make it easy to keep track of music recommendations without them getting lost among other chat apps. For artists, podcasters and authors, this feature creates new ways to increase organic reach — the more fans share songs directly, the faster tracks, episodes or chapters spread naturally.

How Spotify messaging works

  • Share from the player: while listening to a song, podcast or audiobook, tap the Share icon in the Now playing window, select a contact and send it via message.
  • Start a chat: if you haven’t chatted before, a request will be sent. Messaging becomes possible only once the other person accepts.
  • Replies and emojis: after the request is accepted, you can exchange messages, react with emojis and share more content.
  • Access: find all messages under your profile picture at the top left of the app, including new requests.
  • Suggestions: Spotify suggests people to connect with based on past interactions or shared playlists.

Despite this new feature, you can still share content via Instagram, WhatsApp, TikTok or Snapchat. Spotify Messages complement, rather than replace, existing sharing options.

Security and control

Spotify ensures users have full control over their conversations:

  • Accept or decline requests: every new message starts as a request that can be accepted or rejected.
  • Block and deactivate: you can block unwanted contacts or turn off Messages entirely.
  • Moderation and encryption: chats are encrypted and monitored by proactive filters and a moderation team to detect illegal or harmful content early.
  • Report violations: any misuse or violation of Spotify’s Terms of Use can be reported directly from the chat.

These measures ensure a safe and comfortable environment for sharing music and conversations.

Why this is exciting for artists

For artists, DJs and podcasters, Messages mean more authentic growth. When fans can share your tracks directly with friends, your music spreads faster and more personally. Word-of-mouth recommendations remain one of the most powerful drivers of streams and follower growth.
Conversations about new releases now happen inside Spotify, where the music is immediately available. As an artist, encourage your fans to share your songs to increase visibility and connect with new listeners.
