Music streaming in Germany reached new heights in 2022 with a whopping 178 billion audio streams recorded, according to a special analysis by GfK Entertainment in partnership with the Federal Association of the Music Industry (BVMI). This is an 8% increase from 2021 and a whopping two-thirds more than in 2019.
When it comes to the types of music being streamed, current releases were particularly popular, with 47% of all streams coming from productions that were released since 2020. Pop music was the clear winner, making up the largest share of all streams, followed by hip hop and rap, rock, and dance.
In the physical market, rock was the top genre, with a 30% share for CDs and 52% for vinyl. Pop music still had a strong presence with a 24% share for CDs and 27% for vinyl. Schlager productions, which are a specific genre of music popular in Germany, also saw a steady increase since 2017, with a 12% share for CDs.
It's clear that the love for music streaming is still going strong and shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon. However, it's worth noting that this diverse listening behavior and fan preferences aren't always reflected in the music played on radio stations, as the Official German Airplay Charts for 2022 don't feature a single German-language title in the top 100.
In conclusion, music streaming in Germany reached 178 billion streams in 2022, with pop as the most popular genre. Both streaming and physical sales are popular, but diversity in music streaming is not reflected in radio playlists.
