Spotify Mix Feature: Create DJ transitions for your playlists
Spotify Mix Feature: Personal transitions for your playlists
Spotify users have created nearly nine billion playlists to date. Now Premium subscribers can take their creativity even further: With the new Mix feature, you can add transitions between tracks and customize them to your taste. This beta test gives you more control over your playlist’s flow—from volume to EQ curves and effects.
What is the Spotify mix feature?
The Mix feature allows Premium users to equip playlists with seamless transitions. Music lovers and playlist pros can decide how songs flow into one another, adjust the sound progression and turn a simple list of songs into a continuous listening experience. The feature is still in beta and is currently available to select Premium accounts.
How to create mix transitions
Spotify makes the feature easy to use:
- Open a playlist: Start with an existing playlist or create a new one.
- Select “Mix”: Tap “Mix” in the toolbar to begin editing.
- Auto blend or manual: Choose “Auto” for an instant mix or customize the transitions yourself.
- Presets: Use presets like “Fade” or “Rise” for different transition styles.
- Fine‑tune: Adjust volume, EQ and effects, and use waveform and beat data to find the best entry points.
- Save and share: Save your mix, listen back, and share it with friends. You can also create mixed playlists collaboratively with other Premium users.
- Toggle on and off: The “Mix” button lets you switch the mode on or off at any time.
Tips for smooth transitions
If you’re new to audio mixing, keep these tips in mind:
- Match tempos and keys: Choose songs with similar tempos and Camelot keys to create natural transitions.
- Consider genre: Transitions work especially well with dance genres like house or techno.
- Plan the energy: Think about the mood and energy of your playlist and arrange tracks to build or wind down in a harmonious arc.
- Use in context: Mixing is ideal for eliminating pauses—whether you’re working out, on a road trip or hosting a party.
- Customize the cover: Give mixed playlists a unique look with your own stickers and labels.
What does this mean for artists and DJs?
The Mix feature opens up new possibilities for artists and DJs. You can embed snippets of your songs into thematic playlists and design them to sound like a professional DJ set. For DJs, it’s a great way to share pre‑planned setlists or refine live mixes. Because the feature is still in beta and rolling out gradually, Premium users should keep their app up to date.
